a podcast about how culture and ideas spread among Black Americans, especially outside of mass media

This podcast was borne out of desperation: I started an ambitious project to expand the soul food canon (soulfoodetc.com) and am still not entirely sure how to make it happen. After many false starts and discussions with people from all walks of life, I realized that I needed to study the unique ways that ideas and culture spread and stick among Black folks. The podcast, then, is a deliberate effort to learn from successful examples of Black culture craft with the ultimate goal of applying the lessons to my own work.

The focus of the podcast is on Black American culture in general — from food to sports, music, movies, theatre, literature, sports, comedy, fashion, politics, and technology, among other things.

Join me as I speak with experts, professional & amateur historians, keepers of Black cultural traditions, elders, young people, and everyone in between, in discussions that are equal parts informative and entertaining (and, sometimes, weird).
